Scope and Content Corran Lighthouse, Corran Narrows, Ardgour, Highland (manned until automation in 1970) The Corran Lighthouse, built in 1860 by the engineers, David & Thomas Stevenson, guards the crossing between the mainland and the Ardgour peninsula where Loch Linnhe narrows to a width of 200m. This photograph of the lighthouse was taken c.1884 by Erskine Beveridge. The lighthouse is a short and stumpy round tower, harled and painted white with contrasting ashlar margins. It is encircled by a balcony with a cast iron balustrade, and crowned by a domed light with lattice glazing. The two-storeyed, white-painted house on the left, built at the same time as the lighthouse, provided accommodation for the lighthouse keepers. Until the end of the 18th century, there was nothing to help those sailing the Scottish coasts at night or in misty conditions, except for the occasional beacon privately maintained. In 1786 the Northern Lighthouse Trust was established with the intention of building four lighthouses. The Trust's engineer, Thomas Smith, took Robert Stevenson, his stepson, into partnership, thus beginning the long lasting connection between the Trust and the Stevenson family. Successive generations designed and built lights all around the Scottish coasts throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. They devoted great care to the details of the construction of the lighthouse itself, as well as the provision of accommodation for the keepers and their stores, and even helped in the securing of grazing rights for their animals.
