Scope and Content Thatched Cottage, Cuil Bay, Highland This thatched cottage, photographed by Erskine Beveridge in 1883 in a remote corner of north-west Appin, stands at Cuil Bay, a wide sweeping bay which encircles the north-east coastline of Loch Linnhe. The building, probably dating from the early 19th century, is constructed in a traditional architectural style found in many parts of the Highlands of Scotland. The cottage has walls constructed of large stones and boulders, interspersed with numerous thin, flat slabs, and held together without mortar. The roof is thatched, possibly with reeds, grass or heather, and secured by thick ropes which stretch across its surface. The roof is hip-ended, and the overhanging eaves of thatch form a fringe around the wall-top, both distinctive features in this style of building. A short chimney, crudely constructed from pieces of wood, rises from above a fireplace in the end wall, and barely emerges through the thatch at the roof ridge. A group of children (centre), with some chickens and a small dog, play outside, and a wooden pole, set horizontally along the side of the house, forms a drying line for socks. This delightful domestic scene, captured on camera towards the end of the 19th century, is one of many landscapes of excellent quality and composition that Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920) produced during his travels throughout Scotland. A passionate photographer, Beveridge was also a writer, antiquarian and linen manufacturer, whose private income allowed him to indulge his hobby. Many of his photographs, published posthumously by his son, John Henry Beveridge, in 'Wanderings with a Camera 1882-98' provide an invaluable insight into a form of living and working that is very old and that has now virtually disappeared.
