Scope and Content An Sailean, Lismore, Argyll & Bute (now abandoned) An Sailean, a small, early 19th-century industrial complex on the north-west coast of Lismore, was one of the centres of the island's limestone-quarrying and lime-burning industries before being abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century. This photograph of the settlement was taken in 1883 by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. The lime burners and quarry workers were accommodated in small, single-storeyed, two-roomed detached cottages, built of stone and lime, and dating from the first half of the 19th century. The cottages were grouped around a small, well-sheltered bay with a stone-built quay (left) from where the lime was shipped to the mainland. Limestone was quarried from a 50m-high limestone cliff that overlooked the bay, and heated in two pairs of lime kilns at the foot of the cliff. The process produced quicklime (calcium oxide), which had many industrial uses but its main function was as a building material and in the making of cement. The lime-burning industry on Lismore seems to have begun towards the end of the 18th century, and was carried out at two other sites on the island, Port Kilcheran and Port Ramsay in the north.
