Scope and Content Mission House, Coll, Argyll & Bute Coll, a low, flat island with a bleak landscape of weathered outcrops of rock, lies north-west of Mull, some 25km from Tobermory. The Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge, visited Coll c.1898, and provided one of the oldest known photographic records of the island. The Mission House, with its trim appearance, slated roof and whitewashed rubble-built walls on boulder footings, is typical of cottages on the island. It dates from the 19th century and could be found elsewhere in rural Scotland. The single-storeyed, three-bayed stone cottage is recognisable as the traditional home of the farm worker, fisherfolk or village inhabitant. The survivals largely date from the 19th century, for most earlier rural and coastal predecessors have disappeared. They were built by crofters, small farmers and fisherfolk, exploiting local materials, although enlightened landlords often provided such housing, largely following the traditional designs.
