Scope and Content Upper Largo, Fife Upper Largo, a pleasant rural village centred round its parish church, lies a short distance inland from Lower Largo and the sea. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the village c.1890. The village, a collection of 18th-century cottages and houses, surrounds the parish church within its churchyard high on a hill. The church, cruciform in plan, was reconstructed in 1816-17 by the local architect, Alexander Leslie, incorporating a 17th-century chancel and a square tower, which straddles the chancel's west end, dating from 1628. The squat pointed spire, topped by a weathercock, was added at the same time. Upper or Kirkton of Largo developed around its church, said to have begun in the 12th century when the surrounding lands were given to the monastery at North Berwick by Duncan, Earl of Fife. Its chief industry was the manufacture of linens, and there were once extensive bleaching greens in the village. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
