Scope and Content Denburn House, No 1 Marketgate, Crail, Fife, from the south-west Denburn House, an early 18th-century house that incorporates part of a 17th-century house, stands within a large walled garden on the north side of Marketgate. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed the house on a visit to Crail c.1890. This large, two-storeyed house has a five-windowed, harled and whitewashed front with painted margins round the windows, and a steeply pitched roof with slated dormers and crowstepped gables. The rustic, timber-built porch and lean-to conservatory are Victorian additions. A single-storeyed coachhouse wing (right) lies to the east. The five-windowed front, attractively fashionable in the early 18th century, allowed the front rooms to be generously lit, and allotted two windows to each of the main outer rooms. The sliding sash-and-case windows (well established by the 18th century) have small glazed panes or astragals which give a neat contribution to the frontage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
