Scope and Content Tomb of William Douglas of Symbister, St Mary's Parish Church, Marketgate, Crail, Fife This mural tomb commemorates William Bruce, laird of Symbister on Shetland, who died around 1630 aged about 80. Within the niche is a mutilated effigy of William Bruce, depicted in full plate armour. The Corinthian pilasters on either side are carved with various emblems, including crossed coffins, the skull and crossbones and crossed shovels, all symbols of death. Above the pilasters, a frieze bears the faint inscription WILLIAM BRVCE OF SYNBASTER (right) and LOVE CRIST YE LAMBE BEWAR OF SIN. The letters of the two friezes form an anagram, the words on the right being contained within those on the left. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
