Scope and Content Fragment of an Anglian cross-shaft, Hoddom, Dumfries and Galloway Early Christian sculpture is known from relatively few sites across Dumfries and Galloway, but an important collection of carved fragments has been recovered in area around Hoddom parish church, the site of an early monastery. Carved on the cross-shaft's left face is the figure of an Apostle (or one of the Fathers of the Church), a halo rising from his tonsured head. The book which he holds is presumably the Bible or some other devotional work. Around the 9th century the Angles of Northumbria settled across lowland Scotland and Cumbria. Along with the settlers came churches and monasteries, where finely carved free-standing crosses like this were produced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
