Scope and Content Medieval grave-slab, Annan High Street Graveyard, Old Parish Church, Dumfries and Galloway Whilst nothing remains of the medieval parish church of Annan, first on record in 1170, a raised platform at the centre of the burial-ground probably indicates its position. This grave-slab has been reused for a new grave in the 18th century, an inscription added along the top of the stone. In style the slab is reminiscent of earlier hogbacked stones with coped sides and 'shingles' resembling the roof of a house on its sides. Hogback stones appear to have developed in northern England, influenced by the house-shaped shrines used to hold the relics of Christian saints. In Scotland, early examples can be seen at Govan, Meigle and on Inchcolm Island on the Firth of Forth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
