Scope and Content Head panel of a medieval grave-slab, Annan High Street Graveyard, Old Parish Church, Dumfries and Galloway Whilst nothing remains of the medieval parish church of Annan, first on record in 1170, a raised platform at the centre of the burial-ground probably indicates its position. Within the churchyard are a number of medieval grave-slabs. Carved on the end of the slab is what appears to be a rosette with a pair of fleur-de-lys at the bottom. Presumably there were another pair at the top where the stone is now damaged. Similar designs can be seen on the slab at Dornock. Hogback stones appear to have developed in northern England, influenced by the house-shaped shrines used to hold the relics of Christian saints. In Scotland, early examples can be seen at Govan, Meigle and on Inchcolm Island on the Firth of Forth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
