Scope and Content Column capital, Carruthers old parish church, Dumfries and Galloway Nothing remains of the medieval parish church of Carruthers, though a raised platform near the centre of the churchyard probably indicates its position. Pieces of medieval sculpture can be seen in the churchyard wall. This Romanesque capital dates to the 12th or 13th century, though at some point the capital's shaft has been hollowed out to be used as a basin or perhaps as a font. High quality carving like this suggests the church had wealthy patrons. In 1609, an Act of the Scottish parliament ordered that the parishes of Carruthers, Middlebie and Pennersaughs were to be merged. The church building was still standing around 1750, and the burial-ground contains a number of 18th-century headstones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
