Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32428. Plan showing the medieval estate centre at Tanlawhill, Dumfries and Galloway Reduced to little more than a spread of stones, the tower-house at Tanlawhill and its associated outbuildings occupy a broad natural shelf overlooking the farmsteading of Tanlawhill, some 250m to the north. The now ruined square tower lies at the centre of a post-medieval farmstead or toun, comprising a number of turf-banked fields and a series of rectangular buildings on platforms set into the slope. Immediately to the west of the enclosures is a kiln. In 1598, John Beattie, of 'Tanlaw Hill' was executed as a rebel for non-payment of monies to Lord Maxwell, the landowner. The farmstead was apparently still occupied in 1691, listed as possessing three hearths and a kiln in the hearth tax of that year. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
