Catalogue Number SC 382038

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 32510

Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32302. Plan of Wamphray Place, Dumfries and Galloway Remains of a motte-and-bailey castle stand on a promontory situated on the western-most edge of Wamphray Glen, about 100m north of Wamphray House. Overlying the presumed site of the medieval bailey are remains of late or post-medieval turf-built structures. The footings of a stone building lie at the base of the eroded motte. These buildings probably represent a late medieval estate centre. The lands of Wamphray were held by the Corrie family until 1357, passing to Roger Kirkpatrick around this date. By 1476 Wamphray was in the hands of the Johnstone family who retained the estate until 1746, when it was purchased by the Earl of Hopetoun. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
