SC 382035

Description Publication drawing; Plan of Garpol Water moated site.

Date 14/3/1995

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 382035

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 32287

Scope and Content Redrawn from DC 32315 for publication with comparative plans of moated sites. Plan showing a five-sided moated enclosure at Garpol Water, Dumfries and Galloway Remains of a five-sided moated enclosure lie in badly-drained ground on the eastern bank of the Garpol Water. This five-sided moated enclosure was probably rectangular and is enclosed by a broad flat-bottomed ditch and internal bank. Erosion by the Garpol Water has destroyed much of the west and south of the site. This moated site has been suggested as being a stock enclosure for the motte-and-bailey castle at Garpol Water, which lies some 200m to the east. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
