Description Publication drawing; Plan of Gotterbie Moor moated site.

Date 14/3/1995

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 382034

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 32289

Scope and Content Redrawn from DC 32467 for publication with comparative plans of moated sites. Plan of a moated site at Gotterbie Moor, Dumfries and Galloway About 400m east of Burrance steading are the remains of a moated enclosure. Roughly rectangular, the enclosure lies within an earth-and-stone bank set on boulder footings and was possibly stone-faced. A flat-bottomed moat, some 4m broad, surrounds the site. On the east is a causewayed entrance. Moated sites such as these have been interpreted as being residences of lower-ranking landowners who perhaps controlled only small, compact estates.
