Plan showing the motte-and-bailey castle at Garpol Water, Dumfries and Galloway The well-preserved earthworks of a motte-and-bailey castle stand near the Garpol Water. The castle was probably built by the Kirkpatrick family in the 12th century. The earthworks of this castle have been shaped from a natural hillock, with the levelled summit becoming an elongated motte. A level terrace below the hillock forms a bailey, protected by a broad deep ditch and outer bank on the west. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Anglo-Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of feudal lordship, as well as being fortified residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
