Scope and Content Plan of Auldton motte, Dumfries and Galloway Situated 100m south-east of Shieldaig cottage are the remains of a motte-and-bailey castle. The castle, erected by the de Brus family, was presumably held by a vassal. An unknown antiquarian excavation has damaged part of the motte which is otherwise well-preserved. The entrance into the bailey is visible as a break in the surviving section of bank on the north, presumably with a timber bridge to cross the ditch. During the reign of David I (1124-1153) many Anglo-Norman nobles received estates across southern Scotland. Motte-and-bailey castles served as potent symbols of their lordship, as well as being fortified residences for themselves and their retainers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
