Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32473. Plan of Lochmaben old castle, Dumfries and Galloway Following the collapse of the de Brus castle at Annandale some time between 1173 and 1218, a new site at Lochmaben between the Kirk Loch and Castle Loch was chosen for their principal seat of power. A natural hillock was probably used to create the motte, which has a summit some 60m in diameter. Ploughing has destroyed the bailey which lay to the north-west, though vestiges of its ditch-system survive in a gully to the south of the motte. At the invitation of David I (1124-1153), the Yorkshire-based de Brus family received the lands of Annandale around 1124. For these new Norman lords, motte-and-bailey castles acted as potent symbols of their lordship as well as being fortified residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
