Scope and Content Drawn for publication as comparative plan. Unattributed, [1996] Plan of a burnt mound at Blaebeck, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of a crescent-shaped burnt mound lie in rough ground, situated around 170m north of Blaebeck farmhouse. Like other burnt mounds, this one at Blaebeck is composed of reddish fire-cracked stones, small pieces of charcoal and loose black earth. Within the hollow of the crescent-shaped mound are traces of a pit, presumably for cooking. Burnt mounds are generally considered to be Bronze Age cooking places, usually found near streams or springs. Stones were heated in hearths and used to boil water by plunging them into water-filled troughs or pits. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
