Catalogue Number SC 381982

Copy of DC 32536

Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32431. Plan showing fort at Bailiehill, Camp Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Bailiehill occupies the highest point on Camp Hill, overlooking the confluence of the Black and White Esk. The fort was evidently an important centre of power in Upper Eskdale during the Iron Age. The earthworks at Bailiehill comprise the defences of at least three successive forts within a much larger enclosure, probably an annexe. Within the ramparts are remains of numerous round-houses, the product of several different phases of occupation. Whilst appearing impressive, many forts were probably constructed by tribal leaders as displays of their prestige and power. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
