Publication drawing; Plan of Parks (Park Hill) fort.

SC 381970

Description Publication drawing; Plan of Parks (Park Hill) fort.

Date 31/8/1994

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 381970

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 32608

Scope and Content Plan of the fort at Park Hill, Dumfries and Galloway. Redrawn from DC 32392 for publication as comparative plan. The remains of this fort occupy the more westerly of the two flat-topped summits of Park Hill, about 5km south-west of Beattock. Enclosed by a stony rampart and ditch, the fort lies within a larger enclosure defined by a reduced bank and ditch, perhaps representing an earlier period of occupation or an annexe. Traces of at least three round-houses are preserved inside the fort. Whilst appearing impressive, many forts were probably constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders, often occupying prominent positions in the landscape.
