Scope and Content Plan of a large enclosed settlement on Stanshiel Rig, Dumfries and Galloway Across Stanshiel Rig are traces of prehistoric field-systems, clearance cairns and settlements. Shown on this plan are the heavily robbed remains of an enclosed settlement on Stanshiel Rig. The massive enclosing drystone wall measures up to 3m thick in places, equivalent to some fort ramparts, though its original height is unclear. Within the settlement, which has opposing entrances, are the remains of a number of hut-platforms. Settlements like this enclosed timber-built round-houses with a yard for keeping animals and storage. A mixture of animal husbandry and arable cultivation were likely practised. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN. Redrawn from DC 32378 for publication as comparative plan. Unattributed, amended 10 April 1996.
