Scope and Content View of the enclosure wall at Blacklaw, Dumfries and Galloway In the 16th century, Blacklaw was the focus of a large medieval estate, with an assortment of barns, stores, kilns and other buildings. These extensive and impressive ruins lie some 550m north of Longbedholm steading within a forest clearing. The estate wall, a section of which is seen here, defines an area measuring 46m by 43m. The walls are not considered to have been a defensive structure, being only 2.1m thick, but the south-east wall appears to have been subsequently thickened to over 3m. Blacklaw is first recorded around 1315 in a grant by Robert I to David Lindsay. The estate subsequently passed to the Herries of Terregles, to the Maxwells and finally to the Johnstones. Lesser estate centres were established at Mellingshaw and Raecleugh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
