Scope and Content Boarhills, Fife Boarhills, a pretty farm hamlet surrounded by rich agricultural land on the east coast of Fife, lies 5km south-east of St Andrews. This photograph of the village was taken c.1885 by Erskine Beveridge. This charming village is a collection of traditional 18th- and early 19th-century cottages which line a winding street running between farm steadings. The buildings are rubble-built, with steeply pitched pantiled roofs. The ivy-covered house on the corner has crowstepped gables, also characteristic of the area. Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920), son of the founder of St Leonard's Linen Works in Dunfermline, had a private income that allowed him to indulge one of his main passions, photography. He travelled with his camera throughout Fife, photographing many of the coastal and agricultural villages, and producing a collection of landscapes that are of excellent quality and composition as well as a unique photographic record of life in a rural community in the late 19th century.
