Scope and Content Croft Building, Blarmachfoldach, Highland Blarmachfoldach, a small crofting township of around 50 buildings, lies in a remote mountainous region of Lochaber, approximately 6km south of Fort William. This photograph of a croft building was taken by Erskine Beveridge in 1883. This long, low building, with walls constructed of large, irregularly-shaped hill stones held together without mortar, has a small opening for a door towards one end. The roof is of turf, the turfs laid grass side downwards in neat, overlapping rows set over the roof timbers, and secured by ropes tied down over the roof at regular intervals. A ladder (right), lying against the pitch of the roof, allows easy access to the roof ridge for repairs, or for thatching, if the intention is to thatch over the turf base. The yard at the front, partially enclosed by a low, almost ruinous drystone wall, contains several conical-shaped haystacks supported by long wooden poles. The figure of the crofter, standing at the door, has been caught on camera by Beveridge. Erskine Beveridge (1851-1920) was a writer, antiquarian and linen manufacturer, whose private income allowed him to indulge his passion for photography. In the late 19th century, he travelled widely with his camera throughout the Highlands of Scotland, photographing many of the isolated crofting communities, and providing a unique photographic record of a form of living and working that is very old. This is perhaps even more remarkable considering the bulky cameras, tripods and heavy glass negative plates that had to accompany Beveridge on his travels. His son, John Henry Beveridge, produced a collection of many of these landscapes in a two-volume book, 'Wanderings with a Camera 1882-98', which was published in 1923 after his father's death.
