Scope and Content Invernahyle Bridge, Argyll & Bute Invernahyle Bridge carries the old road which runs through the Strath of Appin over the River An Iola in a picturesque setting at the west end of the valley near Loch Creran. The bridge was photographed c.1885 by the Victorian photographer, Erskine Beveridge. This charming, single-span bridge has been founded on the rocks and rounded boulders of the riverbed. It is rubble-built, and has survived time and flood on a sharp bend in the river. The date of the bridge is unknown. The bridge was part of the main route of communication between Portnacroish on the west coast of Appin and Loch Creran to the east. From Beveridge's photograph, it is easy to imagine how it would have looked in the 18th or early 19th centuries, with a traffic of laden pack animals, rough carts, itinerant tradesmen, gentry on horseback, shepherds and herded animals. Many of the cattle from the outlying islands on the west coast or the isolated areas of Appin were driven this way in summer to the beef markets in the Lowlands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
